Request for information – FOI13389
Thank you for your e-mail of 8 July 2013, which we acknowledge, requesting the following information from Ordnance Survey:
I would like to submit an enquiry or a Freedom of Information Act request concerning maps and whether you have oceanic maps and also I am looking for a detailed map of Brighton, there are lots of little alley ways which I did not know about until recently.
Ordnance Survey does not hold Oceanic maps. The remit for such maps does not lie with Ordnance Survey, and we suggest you contact the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) who provide nautical charts and navigational services of the world’s oceans and ports to support world shipping.
Regarding the mapping of Brighton, this is held by Ordnance Survey, but is exempt from disclosure under Section 21 (1) of the Freedom of Information Act – Information accessible to applicant by other means.
We consider this exemption applies because we already make paper mapping available to purchase from High Street retailers, and also, under OS OpenData™ where you are able to freely view and download over 10 of our detailed digital maps, for use in both personal and commercial applications.
OS Street View® will provide you with street level information.
As the requested information is not held or is exempt from disclosure under an absolute exemption, we have determined that in all the circumstances of this case the Public interest consideration (section 17 FOIA) is not applicable.
Your enquiry has been processed according to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000. If you are unhappy with our response, you may request an internal review with our FOI Internal Review Officer, by contacting them as follows:
FOI Internal Review Officer
Customer Service Centre
Please include the reference number above. You may request an internal review where you believe Ordnance Survey has:
- Failed to respond to your request within the time limits (normally 20 working days)
- Failed to tell you whether or not we hold the information
- Failed to provide the information you have requested
- Failed to explain the reasons for refusing a request
- Failed to correctly apply an exemption or exception
The FOI Internal Review Officer will not have been involved in the original decision. They will conduct an independent internal review and will inform you of the outcome of the review normally within 20 working days, but exceptionally within 40 working days, in line with the Information Commissioner’s guidance.
The FOI Internal Review Officer will either: uphold the original decision, provide an additional explanation of the exemption/s applied or release further information, if it is considered appropriate to do so.
