FOI Request FOI13418

Many thanks for your e-mail. As this is a new request under the terms of the FOI Act, it has been allocated a new reference number (in bold above). Please use this reference number in any correspondence relating to this request.

I hereby acknowledge your e-mail of 16 September 2013, requesting the following information from Ordnance Survey in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000:

In the section entitled "Contour Example" of 'Contours 1 to 25000 spec.docx' it states:

"An example of contours appearing on the map is shown in the HEIGHTS AND NATURAL FEATURES sub-panel of the reference panel."

Does the "HEIGHTS AND NATURAL FEATURES sub-panel" refer to a computer programme used by OS?

If so can you please provide print outs of all relevant material from the programme relating to contours. Can you also identify whether any other information is held by Ordnance Survey, either digitally or otherwise, in relation to contours that is used by cartographers.

Can you please identity the name of the computer programme used, its purpose and a copy of the programme manual that accompanies it.

I can confirm that Ordnance Survey does hold this information, however it is exempt under Section 21 (1) of the FOIA 'Information accessible to applicant by other means'. This is because we already make the "HEIGHTS AND NATURAL FEATURES" information available as a section on the map legend. It is not a computer programme. The legend can be viewed in our OS Explorer Map/1:25 000 Scale Colour Raster PDF.

Section 21 is an absolute exemption and no public interest test is required.

Under our duty to provide advice and assistance, Section 16 of the FOIA, we advise that minimal update is carried out on contours at the scale in question, however we very occasionally use a data product called Land-Form PROFILE® to update contours which may be of further interest to you. You can access information on our Land-Form PROFILE support page.
