Request for information – FOI14530
Thank you for your email 18 February 2015, requesting:
I was wondering if you could provide details of any instructions given to OS surveyors on the mereing of new administrative boundaries in relation to private property boundaries in the period before 1970.
I have a recollection that the surveyor was instructed to enquire with landowners to ensure that a new administrative boundary was mered so that the administrative boundary coincided with the limits of land ownership, hence mereings such as 3 ft RH etc.
I believe that any such instructions may have been included in the “Red Book 1952” but I have been unable to track down a copy of this book.
I confirm that Ordnance Survey does hold this information and I have attached a scanned copy of an extract from the “Red Book 1952”.
I hope the above information is useful to you.
