Request for information – FOI14540
Thank you for your email of 31 March 2015, requesting the following information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000:
Has Ordnance Survey provided information to Sat Nav suppliers showing xxxxxx (a narrow residential street with a 90 degree bend in) as a faster/shorter route than the xxxxxx and/or Is OS responsible for showing SatNav owners that xxxxxx is an alternative option to the main roads?
I regret to inform you that Ordnance Survey is unable to help you with your enquiry as we do not hold this information.
We do not hold this information. Ordnance Survey does not provide routes to Sat Nav suppliers. Only the data is supplied to Sat Nav suppliers to which their routing rules are applied to generate/calculate a route.
However Under our duty to provide advice and assistance as stipulated in Section 16 of the FOIA, we can provide the following explanation which may assist you in this matter.
Routing engines calculate the most appropriate route based on many variables, one of these variables would be the classification of a road, and for instance a route involving a B Road would be preferential over a route on a local street. xxxxxx is in our data as a local street and as such a route should take the higher ranked roads of the xxxxxx and the Minor Road (xxxxxx) as the most appropriate route. However if a route is calculated on the shortest possible route the classification of the roads are not taken into account, leading to using xxxxxx which is 350 meters versus xxxxxx and the xxxxxx which is 429 meters.
I hope the above is of use to you.
