Request for information – FOI14639
Thank you for your email of 29 January 2016, requesting the following information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000:
Given that I am researching my ancestors who were farmers for several generations in the West Walton area of Norfolk, I would like to find out why one place, south-west of Wiggenhall St Mary Magdalen, is called Porters Fen Corner. I am prepared to support any expenses involved in your reply.
I can confirm that Ordnance Survey does not hold this information required. However, under our duty to provide advice and assistance as stipulated in Section 16 of the FOIA, we can provide the following explanation which may assist you in this matter.
OS would have used some local knowledge or advice to determine the name Porter’s Fen Corner which should be recorded be in the old Object Name Books (ONBs) for Plans either TF5809 or TF5909.
Other than that information OS would have no historical knowledge as to the specific origin of the name.
The Object Name Books is also no longer held by OS. These are kept at The National Archives for England and Wales. These are available for public viewing in the libraries/reading rooms. Details of the National Archives are as follows: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
I hope you find the above information is helpful to you.
