Our response

I can confirm that Ordnance Survey holds some of the information you have requested, and we are pleased to provide you with the answers as identified below. Where the information requested is not held, or is exempt from disclosure, this is stated.

For some of the information requested we seek further clarification from you and this is stated below. The reason we ask for clarification is to ensure that we understand exactly what you wish to know, as this will enable us to provide an appropriate response to your request.

We respond to each of your requests for information in turn below.

  • The total number of IT staff employed by the organisation.
I confirm that this information is held. The total number of IT staff is 169.
  • Please list and provide contact details for the IT senior management team including CIO, IT Director, Head of IT and Infrastructure Architects if applicable.
I can confirm that Ordnance Survey does not hold contact details for IT Director or Head of IT, however, in accordance with our duty to provide advice and assistance under s16 of the FOIA, we have indicated in the table below the equivalent roles at Ordnance Survey for the positions of IT Director and Head of IT and replied to your FOI request in relation to such roles.

Job Title Equivalent role at Ordnance Survey
IT Director

Director of Operations

Head of IT Head of Core Technology Development Delivery

We can advise that Mr. Neil Ackroyd holds the role of Director of Operations and is also the Chief Operating Officer of Ordnance Survey. This information is already published on the Director profiles web page.

However, Mr Ackroyd’s direct telephone number and email is withheld as this information is not publicly referenced and as such we withhold this information under Section 40 (2) of the FOIA, ‘personal information’, see below for more information.

We do hold contact details for the Head of Core Technology Development Delivery and Information Architects, however, we consider that such contact details, including names, email addresses and telephone numbers are ‘personal information’ and as such we withhold this information from disclosure under Section 40 (2) of the FOIA, ‘personal information’.

We consider this exemption applies because the release of employee names (in respect of the Head of Core Technology Development Delivery and Information Architects), email addresses and/or other contact information where not otherwise publicly referenced would breach one of the data protection principles, as detailed in Section 40(3) (a) (i) of the FOIA.

In applying this exemption, we have considered whether the disclosure of the personal data in question would be ‘fair’ (as described in Part 11 of Schedule 1 to the Data Protection Act). We have also given particular consideration to the likely expectations of the data subject regarding the disclosure of their personal information in this matter.

When Section 40(2) of the FOIA is engaged, and where the release of the requested information would breach one of the Data Protection principles, this constitutes an absolute exemption, and no public interest test is required.

  • Please confirm your current primary storage vendors and replacement/refresh dates.
Unfortunately we will not be able to answer your request without further clarification. Please clarify what you mean by storage vendors; is it the manufacturers or seller?
  • Please confirm your current backup/data recovery vendors and replacement/refresh dates.

I confirm this information is held. The number of physical servers is 400, virtual servers is 1900 and the amount of used storage is 1.9PB.
  • Please confirm if you are utilising desktop virtualisation technologies and if so how many users do you provide services for?
I can confirm this information is not held. This is because no desktop virtualisation technologies are used.

  • Total available budget for IT infrastructure for FY16/17 and FY17/18.

Please note that under the FOIA, we are obliged to provide you with a response to your requests within twenty working days. However, where we have sought clarification from you in relation to the specific requests identified above, we will halt the twenty working days at the date of this correspondence, and recommence the twenty working days from the date your clarification response is received by Ordnance Survey.
