FOI17740 – Request for information

Request

Thank you for your email of 01/03/2017, requesting information from Ordnance Survey in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA):

I have obtained from the Bodleian Library (with OS agreement with regards copyright) a copy of OS xxxxx/xxxx.

Underneath the xxxxx/xxxx printed in the top right hand corner is a capital letter "A" (attached in an extract).
1. Could you please tell me the exact significance of this letter "A".
2. Could you tell me whether any latter printed editions/revisions (up to the PAI revision undertaken in 2004) were published for xxxxx/xxxx and if so, the date of the printed publication and the letter marks in the top right corner (or elsewhere on the map) which were used to identify these different editions/revisions.

Our response

Responding to each question that you have raised in turn below:

1. Could you please tell me the exact significance of this letter "A".
I confirm that Ordnance Survey does not hold the information you have requested as it does not keep records of historic Ordnance Survey printed maps. However, under the duty to provide information and assistance in accordance with section 16 of FOIA, we can provide the following information which may assist you in this matter.

The letter ‘A’ on the extract of the old Ordnance Survey map that you have provided may indicate that the historical map is a first edition of the map printed at metric scale 1:2500.

We do not hold information about the subsequent publications for the map title xxxxx/xxxx up until 2004, nor the dates and the letter marks identifying such edition/ revisions, as Ordnance Survey does not keep records of historical printed maps.

Under the duty to provide information and assistance, in accordance with section 16 of the FOIA we provide the following information.

To find out the dates of publication you may wish to have a look at the printed copies of Ordnance Survey maps held in the one of the Legal Deposit Libraries or available from a commercial provider. Find further information about how to access historical Ordnance Survey maps.
