Thank you for your email of 25 January 2018 requesting information from Ordnance Survey in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000, as set out in the extract below:

  • Does your organisation have a Facebook page(s)? If yes, what is/are the URL(s) and when were they set up?
  • Does your organisation advertise or spend any money on Facebook? If yes, please can you outline what expenditure has occurred and break down expenditure per calendar year (January to December) since 2004?
  • Does your organisation have a Twitter account? If yes, what is/are the URL(s) and when were they set up?
  • Does your organisation advertise or spend any money on Twitter? If yes, please can you outline what expenditure has occurred and break down expenditure per calendar year (January to December) since 2006?
  • Does your organisation use Google G-Suite services (Google services) or does your organisation rely on Google for any services (such as email hosting)? If yes, what are the services, when were they agreed and how much did they cost?
  • Does your organisation advertise or spend any money on Google? If yes, please can you outline what expenditure has occurred and break down expenditure per calendar year (January to December) since the payments first began?

Our response

I confirm that Ordnance Survey does hold some of the information you have requested. Where the information is not held this is stated. Taking each request in turn, I confirm the following:

  • Does your organisation have a Facebook page(s)? If yes, what is/are the URL(s) and when were they set up?
    I can confirm that Ordnance Survey has the following Facebook account ‘osmapping’:- https://www.facebook.com/osmapping/
    The page was set up in November 2008.
  • Does your organisation advertise or spend any money on Facebook? If yes, please can you outline what expenditure has occurred and break down expenditure per calendar year (January to December) since 2004?
    I can confirm that Ordnance Survey advertise/spend money on Facebook.

    The total expenditure since payments first began in 2015 - 2017 was £162,035.56.

    Ordnance Survey does not hold information prior to 2015 since we did not advertise or spend any money on Facebook prior to 2015.

  • Does your organisation advertise or spend any money on Twitter? If yes, please can you outline what expenditure has occurred and break down expenditure per calendar year (January to December) since 2006?
    I can confirm that Ordnance Survey does not advertise or spend money on Twitter.
  • Does your organisation use Google G-Suite services (Google services) or does your organisation rely on Google for any services (such as email hosting)? If yes, what are the services, when were they agreed and how much did they cost?
    I can confirm that Ordnance Survey have been using Google Drive since 2015, the current cost associated with this service is £120.00 per month.
  • Does your organisation advertise or spend any money on Google? If yes, please can you outline what expenditure has occurred and break down expenditure per calendar year (January to December) since the payments first began?
    I can confirm that Ordnance Survey advertise/spend money on Google.

    The total expenditure occurred since payments first began in 2014 - 2017 is £1,060,907

Internal review

Please include the reference number above. You may request an internal review where you believe Ordnance Survey has:

  • Failed to respond to your request within the time limits (normally 20 working days)
  • Failed to tell you whether or not we hold the information
  • Failed to provide the information you have requested
  • Failed to explain the reasons for refusing a request
  • Failed to correctly apply an exemption or exception

The Internal Review Officer will not have been involved in the original decision. They will conduct an independent internal review and will inform you of the outcome of the review normally within 20 working days, but exceptionally within 40 working days, in line with the Information Commissioner’s guidance.

The Internal Review Officer will either: uphold the original decision, provide an additional explanation of the exemption/s applied or release further information, if it is considered appropriate to do so.

If, following the outcome of the internal review you remain unhappy with our response, you may raise an appeal, within three months of receiving our response, with the Information Commissioner’s Office.
