What does the dotted line represent on a Title Plan?

Thank you for your letter of 25 July 2018, requesting information from Ordnance Survey in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000, as set out below:

I enclose two identical copies of HM Land Registry Title Plan xxxxxxx showing a dotted line across the Plan (xxxxxxxx).

  • Is the dotted line a path?
  • Is it a permissive path?
  • If the dotted line represents something else, what does it represent?
  • On what basis (authority) was the dotted line (and what it represents) included on the Land Registry site plan by OS?

Our response

I confirm that Ordnance Survey does hold the information you have requested.

The dotted black line highlighted on your enclosed copy of HM Land Registry Title Plan is an ‘edge of limit’ line which is a representation of a change of form where no other feature exists. This includes the limits of vegetation where there is no actual feature (e.g. fence, hedge or wall) defining the edge. In this instance the edge of limits line is defining the extents (limits of) of the area of trees (to the north) and the area of grassland (to the south).

This is correct to our basic sale mapping specification and it is how the limits of vegetation are shown in our OS MasterMap © product which Land Registry use as a basis for all its plans.

Internal review

  • Failed to respond to your request within the time limits (normally 20 working days)

The Internal Review Officer will not have been involved in the original decision. They will conduct an independent internal review and will inform you of the outcome of the review normally within 20 working days, but exceptionally within 40 working days, in line with the Information Commissioner’s guidance.

The Internal Review Officer will either: uphold the original decision, provide an additional explanation of the exemption/s applied or release further information, if it is considered appropriate to do so.

Appeal to Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)
If, following the outcome of the internal review you remain unhappy with our response, you may raise an appeal, within three months of receiving our response, with the Information Commissioner’s Office.
