Ordnance Survey and Wessex Heartbeat provides healthy heart initiative for staff

23 November 2012

National mapping agency Ordnance Survey has teamed up with the Wessex Heartbeat charity to bring health and wellbeing initiative ‘Your Healthy Heart’ to its staff and emphasise the value of walking as a part of having a healthy life.

Ordnance Survey has committed to help its staff live a healthy life style and look after their hearts by offering regular Your Healthy Heart sessions at its Southampton head office. The free sessions see staff spending 10 minutes one to one with a Wessex Heartbeat health and rehabilitation cardiac nurse. During the session the nurses offer blood pressure checks, cholesterol testing, blood glucose testing and body mass index checks.

The sessions form part of Ordnance Survey’s health and wellbeing package and the organisation held a ‘Building your resilience’ event during the summer showing staff some simple and useful ways to relieve pressure, inspire activity, and manage stress levels. Almost 300 staff have signed up for the Your Healthy Heart sessions so far, with more booked to attend, and benefited from the assessments and healthy heart advice from the nurses.

The charity emphasises the benefits of walking for 30 minutes, five times a week to help keep your heart healthy. Sara Gilbert, senior cardiac rehab sister, said, “Walking is an ideal activity that will keep your heart healthy. It’s cheap, you don’t need any special clothing and it can be done on your own or with others.

“As well as keeping your heart healthy, regular walking will help tone your body so you will look slimmer, reduce stress levels and improve your overall health. You can make walking an everyday part of your life by using stairs instead of lifts, not using the car for short journeys, walking your dog, or having a walk at lunchtime.”

Based on the outskirts of Southampton, Ordnance Survey staff are in the perfect position to take a lunchtime walk around the nearby woodlands with others taking the opportunity to go for a run or cycle ride before using the on-site showers and return to work.

Nadine Prior, Head of Human Resources at Ordnance Survey, said “Working with Wessex Heartbeat to provide advice about heart disease in the workplace made perfect sense to us. Not only is it an effective way to help prevent people becoming future heart patients, but as one of the key ways to keep your heart healthy is to walk, they were a perfect match for us, as such a keen outdoors-loving organisation.”
