Many people start the New Year by making New Year’s resolutions. The trouble is that we make the same resolutions year after year – they are just too difficult to stick to. It’s easy to make excuses, lose momentum and then they quickly fall by the wayside, meaning that we make them over next year and the year after!
But this year, Ordnance Survey is at hand to help you make a success of sticking to your New Year resolutions with a range of support which mean that you will find it hard to make excuses for not sticking to your goals.
Among the most popular New Year’s Resolutions are commitments to get fit, lose some weight and generally get healthier. Spending more time with the family and friends and learning something new can also feature highly on the list of popular New Year resolutions.
Getting fit and losing weight can go hand in hand if you get active outdoors. Using an Ordnance Survey map to identify some good walks is easy if you use our OS Explorer Maps, as footpaths are easily identifiable. With over 400 OS Explorer Maps covering the country, there’s one which can help you explore wherever you are, so there really are no excuses!
If one of our standard areas is not quite right, then you can pick your own area using our custom made map service. This popular service allows you to choose the centre point of the map, cover title and add your own photo. It will be a special and unique map but it stills yearns to be used outdoors.
A subscription to OS getamap makes it even easier to view maps online, and allows you to access other people’s walks, work out how long it should take and even identify where to stop for that all important refreshment break. Using OS getamap allows you to print our maps, showing your planned route, email to your family and friends making it easier to arrange to meet up for a walk or cycle. This will help to tick off that other resolution about spending time with family and friends.
If the weather is not great you could think about using our Active maps, paper maps encapsulated in a waterproof cover, to make sure you will always be able to read your map – even in the heaviest of downpours!
For learning something new, you could think about learning to map read or navigate. Not only is it an interesting and useful skill to have, it could actually save your life one day! Our website has many guides and videos showing the basic skills and we will be running Navigation workshops at the Outdoor Show in London at the Excel Centre from 17–20 January. You could also look out for more local map reading workshops coming your way, with a tie up between Ordnance Survey and some high street outdoors shops.
After you have had a great time exploring the British countryside, you can upload your favourite activity photographs onto the cover of your next map using our custom made map service. You chose the centre-point, cover image and title and we print it the next day and send it straight to you!
So all your New Year’s resolutions could be a whole lot easier to stick to if you make the simple resolution to get Ordnance Survey in your life!
