23 June 2015

Adventurer, Author and TV presenter Steve Backshall has teamed up with Ordnance Survey (OS) to appeal for junior photographers to get snapping this summer and submit their best photos of Great Britain to OS Photofit to feature on the iconic covers of OS paper maps.

Building on the early success of OS Photofit, which has already seen over 12,000 images being submitted to the competition, OS is now looking for photos to feature on the covers of its popular Tour Series of maps.

Steve Backshall, TV presenter and outdoor enthusiast, said: “I’m delighted to be supporting OS with the junior OS Photofit competition. This is your opportunity to show off your camera skills and get your photo on the map!”

“The competition is open to anyone 16 and under and really is a money can’t buy opportunity. The winning photos will take pride of place on OS maps covers and will become a regular sight in and on shop shelves, bookshelves, glove boxes and rucksacks across the country. So if you are out and about this summer – either on your hols, visiting friends or family or around your neighbourhood then don’t forget to take your camera and capture some stunning images of Great Britain.”

The OS Tour series maps are clear and easy-to-use maps which make the ideal travel companion, packed with essential tourist information to help users make the most of their travels and holiday. OS Photofit is looking for photos to take pride of place on the covers of all eight Tour maps covering:

  • Cornwall
  • Lake District and Cumbria
  • Scotland
  • Devon and Somerset West
  • Cotswold and Gloucestershire
  • Peak District and Derbyshire
  • South and Mid Wales
  • North and Mid Wales

Nick Giles, Managing Director of Ordnance Survey Leisure, added: “We have been overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of entries which OS Photofit has received for both the OS Explorer and OS Landranger map covers. However it is the junior competition which I am especially excited about. We are looking for photos taken from different or unusual viewpoints and photos which are filled with fun showcasing Great Britain in all its glory.

“Why not hide your favourite travel companion somewhere in your photo too?! This could be your favourite teddy or toy, gadget or travel book...but don’t make it too easy to find!”

The competition closes on 31 August 2015. The only rule is that the location of the photo must be from somewhere on the map title. Full details of the competition, including uploading instructions and full terms and conditions, can be found at os.uk/photofit

The overall winner of the junior competition (for the OS Tour map covers) will receive an Apple iPad Mini.
