It’s not just OS celebrating an 80th anniversary this year (for the trig pillar), A-Z are 80 years old too. Laura Quittenden tells us more…
This year Geographers’ A-Z Map Company is celebrating its 80th anniversary. A-Z maps have been based on OS data since the company first produced their London Street Atlas in 1936.
Times may have drastically changed for the mapping industry, but A-Z’s commitment and passion for helping the UK find their way around remains unshaken. Over the last 80 years A-Z has grown from its humble beginnings to become the largest independent map company in the UK.
To celebrate the 80th anniversary, the team at A-Z have embarked on a major project which highlights and shares their fascinating eight decade history. A-Z will be publishing a business-related photograph from their archive of maps, tools, production methods and key moments in the company’s history for 80 days from Friday 8 July.
A-Z is also running a competition to celebrate #AZ80 and need you to get involved! By entering, you’ll get the chance to win a reproduction of the 1938-39 A to Z London Street Atlas (RRP £9.95). This publication shows the streets of London as they were before the Second World War and the redevelopments that followed which may be of interest as part of family history research. They will be giving 3 copies away, one on each social media platform (Facebook / Twitter / Instagram). Closing date for entries is the Friday 29 July 2016. Good luck!
