Meet the team: Hannah Ellicott

Continuing our series to introduce you to the talented people within OS and share the variety of work we do, meet Hannah Ellicott. As an IT Trainee Associate, here she gives us a glimpse into her varied role…

Tell us a little about yourself

I  joined OS in February of this year. I started studying Computer Science at university in September 2017 but after about a year or so, I realised it wasn’t for me. I was looking to try something different, so when I spotted the IT Trainee Associate vacancy, I had to apply as it was an opportunity to work for a great company and to learn with a hands-on approach.

Why OS?

My mother trained as a cartographer, so I think my love of maps came from her. I am also an avid climber and rely on OS maps to find my way to crags and up mountains – this was what originally drew me to the company.

However, as I researched more, I started to see all the cutting-edge technology OS is working with and some of their cool projects. Knowing I could be involved in one of those projects is what really sealed the deal for me.

How would you describe OS?

I would describe OS as the only 228-year-old tech company. The fact that OS has always been (and continues to be) at the cutting edge of what’s possible, it’s clear OS is an expert at staying relevant in a constantly changing market.

What do you do as an IT Trainee Associate?

As an IT Trainee Associate (aka Associate Engineer), I work alongside the Engineers and Senior Engineers on project work. Aside from this, I also have access to training relative to my work from SQL and python to geospatial concepts and Azure DevOps. The training can be face to face courses, online tutorials or alternatively working with my mentor to learn an important concept or best practice.

What is it like being part of the programme?

I really enjoy the flexibility of the programme. As there’s no set schedule, I can sign up to training as and when it comes up. A lot of the training is autonomous which I much prefer to other styles. One of the great things about the trainee programme is that every trainee will experience it differently. As we are spread across varying departments and teams, between our cohort we have a massive range of skills.

What have you found most interesting from the programme?

Right now, I’m working on the Mobileye project – a high profile project which aims to use computer vision to recognise street furniture such as traffic lights, signs and manhole covers. I feel a real part of the team and feel very proud of my contributions – even after only a few months I am writing code that is being put into production!

Where do you see yourself once the programme is complete?

I’ve loved my first few months here at OS and can see a great career in software engineering ahead of me! Hopefully at the end of my programme I will become a fully-fledged Software Engineer and can continue to build on my experience within OS.

Any advice?

Whilst I came to the programme with a background in computer science, most of my cohort have come from other subjects from psychology to physics. However, all of us have a keen interest in software engineering which is what is important. Becoming an IT Trainee Associate at OS has definitely been the best decision I could have made for my future. Each day I learn so much and I truly love coming in to work!

We are currently recruiting for IT Trainee Associates to start September 19 – apply now!
