Over the past year, the Geovation team has organised and hosted several successful startup and geo-based talks, workshops and meetups – both at the Geovation Hub and nationally. From our GeoTech Masterclass technical workshops; to informal knowledge-sharing ‘Meetups’, these popular free sessions aim to stimulate creative thinking and innovation, through the use of Geographic Information.
So, what’s in store for the coming weeks ahead?
Taking Agile beyond IT (meetup): 18 May, 6.30–8.30 pm
Next Wednesday evening, “Taking Agile beyond IT” will be the topic of the night for this meetup. We’ll talk through the myth behind Agile being strictly a useful working practice for IT based roles. A number of case studies from global financial institutions and other businesses will be covered, highlighting how to drive adoption of Agile working amongst businesses that have no involvement in IT or software delivery.
Branding for Startups (workshop): 25 May, 5.30–7 pm
Last year we launched the Geovation Hub in London. The collaborative workspace is aimed at providing entrepreneurs, developers and innovators unparalleled access to geospatial data and expertise, as well as a place to exchange ideas, innovate and get inspired. The Hub has grown to almost 500 members, the team have their first Geovation Programme well underway (and are recruiting for the second intake) and have run the Geovation water challenge, producing three winning teams to support further.
We’ve also updated our developer licence terms and launched the new look terms as the Data Exploration Licence at the Geovation Hub, as a trial before rolling it out across the OS licence framework. The Data Exploration Licence gives Hub members free access to OS data for 12 months (or 3 months for any OS data products which contain third party data). Members can access all of the data while they’re at the Hub to research and evaluate ideas, build prototypes and identify commercial opportunities for their business ideas.

Join the team at the Geovation Hub for their popular Trend Café where they’ll be exploring trends around “The Future of Business” with global trend-spotting agency, TrendWatching.
For decades mega-brands have been on an epic quest towards a more responsive consumerism. Whether that’s a mission to demonstrate their ethical high-ground, be seen as ‘good’, or at least better than their competitors, or convince skeptical consumers that their CSR initiatives are more than just to improve their image. But the stark reality is these big-brands are still making billions polluting our skies, exploiting workers, exposing our personal secrets, becoming experts in tax havens, or sugar-pushing us towards a bleak future.
Two months on from the official launch, the Geovation Hub is going strong. The collaborative workspace is aimed at providing entrepreneurs, developers and innovators unparalleled access to geospatial data and expertise, as well as a place to exchange ideas, innovate and get inspired. Recruitment is well under way for the first Geovation Programme, and membership numbers are steadily growing too.

Trend Café: The future of the Sharing Economy

For those of you who don’t yet know them, OSM is an open-source worldwide mapping platform, built by community geographers. Although the OSM community is constantly collecting and contributing new data to the platform they are always looking to find ways to improve their maps by curating open geographic information from other sources, including a range of OS data made available through the OS OpenData portal. In demonstrating the Hub’s role as a place to support innovation across the geospatial industry, we were delighted to host OSMLondon – and provide enough tea and coffee to keep them coding all weekend. Appropriately enough the lunchtime pizzas were kindly sponsored by Pie Technologies.
Earlier in the year, we shared news with you about the latest suite of OS OpenData products that are available through our download portal. The four new products in the portfolio are OS Open Map – Local, OS Open Names, OS Open Rivers and OS Open Roads. On Thursday 2 July, we’re running a free bite-sized masterclass where we’ll be taking a closer look at these products. We’ll be taking classmates on a journey, teaching them how to access, load, style and use the data in open source software – it’s sure to be a great session!
