Strategi roads data work-around

How to use OS Open Roads data with Strategi for routing applications.

Following the Comprehensive Spending Review, we announced that Strategi, along with Meridian 2, will be withdrawn in 2017. It was updated for the last time in January 2016 and will continue to be available through the OS OpenData download service until at least 31 March 2017.

Strategi and Meridian 2 have been superseded by OS Open Roads. When combined with other OS data products, it gives you the 'big picture' road network, with generalised geometry and network connectivity. This will also provide up-to-date roads information for your mapping purposes.

If you use the roads elements of Strategi to create simple road networks, here's how to maintain the currency of your roads content, so you can keep using it for generalised routing purposes.

The workaround

Strategi is nominally a 1:250 000 scale vector product and contains limited roads detail:

Current Strategi roads, which will no longer be updated

Thus you will need to choose which roads are selected in OS Open Roads to make it appropriate for use at this scale.

As of March 2016, no styling is available for OS Open Roads data because it's currently a beta release. You will need to apply a style to the Open Roads data when using it with Strategi. The road styles in Strategi are a useful guide.

In terms of other Strategi data content, please note that railways and large built-up areas are no longer being updated; this might create currency issues over time.

In general, the remaining layers should hold up fairly well in terms of currency. Other OS OpenData products such as OS VectorMap District and OS Open Map – Local might help you.

Your GIS must read roads data in a given order if you want to it to display roads in their correct hiearchy of importance. This can take time. You can disable this draw order to reduce load times, but roads will then be displayed in a random order, yielding an unsightly map (this also applies to the roads in Meridian 2).

The sample maps below show the possible combinations of native OS Open Roads data with Strategi:

Replacement OS Open Roads without minor roads: unfit for purpose?

Replacement OS Open Roads with minor roads: perhaps too detailed?

In their raw state, none of the combinations of roads in OS Open Roads fully reproduce those in Strategi. You will need to run queries on the Open Roads data to select relevant minor road detail to use with Strategi. Your choice of roads to display will depend on your information needs.

This is the work-around for Meridian 2.
