OS Terrain 5

Our detailed digital terrain model (DTM) of Great Britain, OS Terrain 5 is available as a grid of heighted points and contours, both at five-metre intervals.

For 3D visualisations, OS Terrain 5 is ideal. It models significant landscape features such as roads, railways, slopes, quarries and lakes, and offers a typical accuracy level greater than 2 m RMSE.

Quickly understand the impact of flash floods on roads, homes and other major infrastructure. OS Terrain 5 lets you assess the lie of the land on-screen, reducing the need for time-consuming site visits.

OS Terrain 5 adds the third dimension to OS MasterMap Topography layer. You won't find another height product with this level of consistency, currency and detail.

Feature 1

A true virtual landscape

OS Terrain 5 is the height data you need to model construction projects within the wider landscape. This helps you give planners an accurate virtual view of your plans and the steps you’re taking to minimise its visual impact on the surrounding area.

Feature 1

Harness the elements

OS Terrain 5 helps you analyse wind speed and signal propagation. This is important when siting wind turbines, best located in exposed upland areas to maximise their power output, and mobile phone masts, which serve ever more data-hungry users.

Feature 1

With both 5 m grid and 5 m contours in GML, Esri shape and ASCII grid available for one price, OS Terrain 5 puts the detailed analysis of Great Britain’s landscape within reach.

How is this data supplied and what do I need to use it?

OS Terrain 5 is supplied on DVD. If the file size of your order is smaller than 2 Gb, you can get it from our FTP server.

You'll need geographic information system (GIS) software to use OS Terrain 5.

Do I have to order grids and countours?

Yes, you have to choose both formats to complete the order, but you don't have to download anything you don't need.

We make both formats available for one price. This saves you having to manage separate product orders and licences. You'll get links to download grid and contour data; there's also a choice of contour file formats.

Does OS Terrain 5 include any third-party content?

No, the source data is captured by our Integrated Capture Programme suppliers and is our intellectual property.

Can the data be translated to a different format?

Yes. We'd suggest you contact your system supplier or an OS Partner to explore the possibilities.
