Ruth Cookman - Geospatial commission, Head of Policy
Ruth is the Head of Policy at the Geospatial Commission, which is an Expert Committee within the UK Government’s Cabinet Office, tasked with advising the government on priorities for improving the UK’s location data, running the public sector’s key geospatial data contracts and developing and overseeing implementation of the UK’s geospatial strategy. Prior to this, Ruth worked on online harms policy and operations at DCMS, including working in the cross-government Counter Disinformation Unit in the early months of the pandemic. Ruth previously worked at BEIS on clean heat policy.
Joana Simoes - OGC, Developer Relations lead
Joana is a software engineer with more than fifteen years’ experience and a strong expertise in the field of geospatial tech and analytics. After acquiring a PhD in Geographic Information Systems, at the University College of London (UCL), her drive to solve real-world problems has led her to SMEs, an international organization, a research foundation and a start-up.
Joana has been very much involved in the Free and Open Source Software community, in particular in what concerns geospatial technologies, standards and data. This has led her to become a charter member of the Open Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo), and the vice-president of the Portuguese chapter of OSGeo. She also took a leading role at the board of the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI), as a board director of the Industry Advisory Council. She is also a reviewer for the European Commission, and has been involved in education, teaching the next generation of full-stack developers and data analysts.
Carly Morris - Geovation, Head of Geovation
Carly is the Head of Geovation at Ordnance Survey – a community of over 1800 start-ups, investors, corporate innovators and developers who all understand the power of location data. Her role is to lead the Geovation team and strategic direction of the business, offering accelerator programmes, innovation challenges and events in the UK and internationally.
Prior to joining Geovation, Carly was the Head of Innovation at International Airlines Group Cargo, where she led the global innovation strategy and worked with start-ups to test everything from drones to VR in the airline.
Carly’s early career was in corporate finance, where she specialised in trade and working capital solutions for global corporate clients at Barclays. She has received industry-wide recognition for her work, being featured in outlets such as CNBC and Women in Technology, and was a Tech Women 100 winner in 2020.
Carly speaks 5 languages and in her spare time enjoys practicing them by travelling as much as possible!
Charley Glynn - OS, API product manager
Charley Glynn is a professionally trained cartographer with 15 years’ experience in leading cartography and data visualisation initiatives with public sector, enterprise, and start-up communities. His achievements have resulted in winning multiple awards along the way. Charley is passionate about the power of geography and the impact it has on people’s lives and business decision-making.
Charley is the API product manager at Ordnance Survey, leading the API product strategy with a focus on maximising the value of OS data. Since the launch of the OS Data Hub in 2020, he has helped thousands of developers and data scientists discover, access, and use OS data through a new suite of location APIs, significantly improving their time-to-value. In his spare time, he still likes to make the odd map.
Donna Lyndsay - OS, Innovation lead
Donna has unrivalled contacts developed over 30 years in the geospatial and Earth Observation industry, and long standing relationships with information providers. She has been leading B2B concept and product development throughout her career, with a particular interest in developing products for new markets in the Environment, Energy and Adaptation sectors. She has worked for both end users and corporations, has been a founding director of start-ups, a director of more established companies and was recently a UK European Space Agency Regional Ambassador where she raised awareness of the ESA funding instruments to deliver a regular supply of commercially sustainable projects that use or are enabled by space.
Donna was a finalist in the InnovateUK Women In Innovation awards for her work and was chosen to represent UK leading female innovators in the InnovateUK and Getty Exhibition. She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS) and is on the UK Earth Observation Advisory Committee.
Lisa Allen - Open Data Institute, Head of Consultancy for Data Programmes
Lisa is a data professional and has led many data teams in the public sector in the UK. She has experience across various data disciplines including open data, data protection, data transformation, and developing data strategies and frameworks to implement data governance.
At the ODI, Lisa heads up the consultancy team who use their data expertise to advise and guide companies, governments and organisations to make the data ecosystem work better for everyone.
