Web map services and web feature services

Here's some guidance for public sector members about making licensed data available via web mapping services.

Read about how you can make licensed data available via a web map service (WMS) or web feature service (WFS).

This information applies to members of the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement (PSGA).

Clause 4.1.2 of the Member Licence requires you to:
“Use your best endeavours to use adequate technological and security measures, including measures we may reasonably recommend from time to time, to ensure that all licensed data and login details which we provide to you and/or which you hold or are responsible for, are secure from unauthorised use or access.”

We aim to reduce the risk of unlicensed data use without adversely impacting on the services offered by our public sector members. Please see below for our recommendations for securing licensed data on appropriate technological and security measures WMS and WFS services.

If licensed data is made available via a WMS or WFS, it will need to be for your core business. It also needs to be in accordance with the provisions of clause 2.6 (contractor use) or Appendix 1 (licensed use) of the Member Licence. Adherence to these recommendations will ensure compliance with clause 4.1.2 for the Member Licence (as above).

The guidance on this page does not apply to use of WMS or WFS in the context of INSPIRE End User Licensing: PSGA members should instead refer to paragraph 8 of Appendix 1 to the PSGA Member Licence.
