There’s nothing more motivational and inspiring than the New Year. Whether your list of 2018 ambitions includes spending more time with the family, having more adventures, or getting out into the great outdoors more regularly, you have a diary that needs filling with things to do to make those goals a reality. Here’s our suggestions of how to spend your time in the British countryside in 2018.
Redcar and Cleveland Walking Festival - 29th January - 4th February
Kick off the year with the Redcar and Cleveland Walking Festival, which is perfect for both advanced and the less experienced walkers. Put on your walking boots and brace yourself for the best of the British weather, with a huge choice of walks and routes for all abilities. Try your hand at Nordic walking, go bird watching and search for flowers, or walk through woodland to Handale Abbey to take in the spectacular views of the 12th century monument.
Cairngorms Nature Big Weekend 12th - 14th May
A celebration of the wildlife of the Cairngorms National Park, the Cairngorms Nature Big Weekend has something for everyone. With last year’s 2017 event including no less than 50 activities across the 2 days, we’re sure they’ll have something even more exciting for this year. Hear talks from special guests, take part in wild ‘sleepouts’ and get up close to some amazing species in unique nature experiences.
Wild Night Out - 30th June
Wild Night Out has one goal- to encourage you, your friends and your family to get outdoors for one night and one day every year. In its third year, Wild Night Out is ‘the UK’s national day of adventure’, and is the perfect excuse to venture outdoors- whether that be exploring a National Park, trying out Geocoaching, or even jumping in a kayak. Even better, how about turning your activity into a fundraiser to raise some money for charity at the same time?
Countryfile Live - 2nd - 5th August
BBC Countryfile Live is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most popular outdoor events of the year, held in the beautiful parkland of Blenheim Palace. A great day out for the whole family and spanning over 2 days, the event offers a multitude of activities and exhibits, including sheep shows, off-road driving experiences, the famous BBC Introducing stage, talks, debates and a shopping village with over 550 shopping stalls.
South West Outdoor Festival - 5th - 7th October
Taking place at East Soar in South Devon, the South West Outdoor Festival will be back in 2018 for its third year. Organised by the National Trust, the festival is a celebration of all things outdoors, and offers experiences such as trail running, caving, climbing, and even skiing and snowboarding! Wind down from your action-packed day with some live music, or attend some of the captivating talks from guest speakers with a beer in hand from one of the beer and cider tents. No doubt you would have earned it!
These are just a few of our picks for 2018, but there is certainly no shortage of things to do in the British countryside. Here’s to a 2018 spent outside!
