Meet the team: Hazel Hendley
Continuing our series to introduce you to the creative individuals within OS and share the variety of work we do, meet Hazel Hendley. As Interim HR Director, and currently recruiting for a Reward Manager to join OS, Hazel gives us a glimpse into her role and the HR team…
I have a background in Occupational Psychology and taking a strengths-based, positive approach is central to my HR philosophy. Helping business, teams and individuals meet their full potential is hugely rewarding for me.
Outside of work, I’m married and have a daughter. Both my husband and daughter are competitive triathletes and enjoy supporting their goals with good food and plenty of encouragement. In any spare moments I like spending time with friends and family and fitting the odd gym session in.
What’s been your personal highlight of working at OS?
There have been many highlights working here at OS, but one of my greatest memories was last September when the whole business participated in National Fitness Week with a day’s activity. We all got away from our desks, tried something new, got outside and had fun with our colleagues. It was a great privilege to be one of the sponsors of this.
Over the past 18 months I’ve really enjoyed building the HR team. We’re the most engaged team in OS and we’re passionate about delivering a great service to our colleagues across the business.
What’s it like to work in our HR team?
I’d say we are a vibrant HR team passionate about supporting the business to deliver its growth strategy. Through our understanding of our people and the business and our commitment to getting things done, we solve problems, identify and drive timely and pragmatic solutions. This ensures that our working environment enables our people, our teams and OS to be their best.
We’re aiming to create an environment at OS where every employee can have a positive experience every day. Along with exciting and energising work opportunities, we focus on the many other aspects of an individual’s life at work. Everything from wellbeing to diversity and inclusion, from health and safety to a vibrant sports and social community. This starts with the HR team practising what we preach and modelling the way.
What is the importance of the Reward Manager role to the business?
It’s a particularly interesting time to lead the Reward team at OS. We’re working on a new pay framework for employees that ensures that we keep pace with the market whilst balancing our public sector responsibilities. We have a compelling set of employee benefits which we need to enhance the value of and we need to develop frameworks and international mobility policies to ensure that we can grow our business in international markets.
In this role you’ll act as an advisor to the OS Remuneration Committee as we design and deliver a remuneration policy that charts our future aligned to our strategy and resolves some legacy terms. It gives you an opportunity to have a significant impact on helping the business realise it’s potential.
What is OS trying to achieve and how does HR play a pivotal part in that?
OS’s growth strategy focuses on ensuring that we continue as a world-leading geospatial data and technology organisation, while developing the next generation of dynamic location data and services. We were founded 228 years ago, so we’re certainly a mature organisation and right now we’re undergoing a significant transformation – operationally, commercially and culturally.
Our people, their knowledge, expertise, and skills are critical assets essential to delivering OS’s objectives. Our HR mission is to embed employee-centred practices to ensure we retain and attract the people and skills we need. We want to create meaningful learning and careers opportunities, develop people managers that engage and motivate teams to deliver what we need, and reward and recognise success in a range of ways.
