Which map is best for me?

OS Explorer Maps – orange covers

These maps are the most popular and highly detailed series that Ordnance Survey produce.

They are ideal for all outdoor activities where you need to plan routes and find your exact position.

The maps show public rights of way such as footpaths, bridleways and trails, boundaries, landscape features and places of interest.

The map scale is 1:25 000 which means that every 1 cm on the map is equal to 250 m on the ground.

OS Landranger Maps – pink covers

These maps are designed for more general outdoor leisure trips and touring.

They are suitable for days out, short breaks and holidays to both town and country locations.

The maps contain less detail than the OS Explorer series, but cover a larger area and show places of interest, tourist information, roads, and landscape features.

The map scale is 1:50 000 which means that every 1 cm on the map is equal to 500 m on the ground.

Waterproof maps

Both OS Explorer and OS Landranger maps are also available with a protective waterproof coating which we call Active maps. They are more durable in wet and muddy conditions and they can be written on with washable ink and wiped clean afterwards.

Map bundles

We've put together all the maps covering the most popular areas into bundles so you can buy them as a set. Bundles include: The Lake District; The Peak District; Snowdonia; Cornwall; Wainwright's coast-to-coast walk; and the National Three Peaks Challenge.
