The team at Outdoors GPS, a licensed Ordnance Survey partner, created a modern navigation app for the outdoors enthusiast.

Using Ordnance Survey’s OS Map API, Outdoors GPS customers can enjoy seamless maps for searching and sharing routes and places.

Customers can easily track and record their progress, explore thousands of routes, and have unlimited access to OS Maps for the whole of Great Britain.

The challenge

For customers:

Providing hikers, bikers and runners with an app – serving trusted and detailed maps of Great Britain – on which to track locations, plot routes and share places (with a downloadable function for when out of signal range).

For developers:

Using the most up-to-date mapping through a scalable service with minimal down time / interruptions.

The solution

The Outdoors GPS app provides the latest versions of 1:25 000 and 1:50 000 raster mapping to outdoor explorers. These highly detailed maps – which can be viewed both on and offline – show rights of way, footpaths, bridleways, landscape features and places of interest.

Customers can plan their journey by choosing from over 200,000 routes (searching on distance and elevation). Their built-in GPS will then help them navigate their outdoor adventure.

The data-driven benefits

  • The OS Maps API allows Outdoors GPS to serve over 20 million map tiles a month
  • Customers are free to roam offline – with the downloadable app version.
  • Searching and sharing routes and places is easy and user-friendly.
  • Outdoors GPS uses the most up-to-date, highly detailed and reliable mapping, making exploring as enjoyable as possible.
"The OS Maps API was easy to integrate and provides a seamless experience for our users who love the ease and convenience of having Ordnance Survey maps with them, on their phones, at all times."
