Noel tops the list as Britain’s most festive street name, reveals Ordnance Survey

2 minute read
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas as we count down to the big day. But for some residents in Britain, whether they couldn’t wait to put their tree up in November or are a bit more bah humbug, they’ve been surrounded by festive road names all year round.

For a bit of fun, Great Britain’s national mapping service Ordnance Survey (OS) has been looking into where and what the most obvious Christmas-themed street names are.

Aside from Holly Tree names - of which there are over 50 – there are around 150 festive street names in Britain. The most popular festive street names have Noel, not surprisingly, coming out first, with nine Noel Streets and seven Noel Roads.

Then come what must be Santa’s favourites: Christmas Lane (five of them), four North Pole Roads, followed by three Christmas Hills and three Christmas Streets (that’s a mini version of the 12 days of Christmas right there) – although he might be most pleased by the only Santa Claus Drive, located in Aviemore, Inverness.

Noel Square, Gingerbread Lane and Bethlehem Road, plus Mistletoe Way, Road, Gardens and Drive have three streets each spread across the country.

A selection of Britain's most festive road names

Among the unique festive-themed names in Britain are some of OS’s favourites. Who wouldn’t want to live on Tinsel Lane, in Wellsborough, Leicestershire, Polar Bear Drive in Kelleythorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire, or Snowball Hill in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

So which counties in GB are the most Christmassy, including all those Holly Tree names? Greater London leads with 15 yuletide street names, including the only Festive Walk, followed by North Yorkshire with 13, home to the only Sleigh Lane and Yule Lane. Kent has 12, including the only Nativity Close in GB. Nottinghamshire has nine, favouring Santa’s hard-working sleigh crew with Reindeer Street and Reindeer Walk - and planning ahead for a well-earned rest on Old Reindeer Close.
