New OS road maps reflect 9.2% growth of road areas in Great Britain

Ordnance Survey (OS) has published eight road maps to keep pace with the growth of roads in Great Britain

In the last 10 years the area of roads (in square kilometres) across Great Britain has grown by 9.2%. England has seen a rise of 9%, Scotland a rise of 10.3% and Wales 8.9%. OS has captured these changes during its work surveying the country in that time.

Map makers have now added the most significant ones to the re-issued 2020 edition of the OS Road Maps for the nation.

OS Product Manager Paul McGonigal said: “We always urge people to make sure they have got the most up-to-date data, whether this is in a computer sat nav or a paper map to hand in the car. Britain is changing year-on-year, particularly our roads, which is why we have refreshed our eight OS Road Maps for the country. These maps are designed to get you to your destination or your next adventure, so it is important that this information is not out of date.”

The 2020 version of the maps cover every part of Great Britain. The paper sheets are designed for planning days out, weekend breaks, routine trips or to take on staycation. They show motorways, primary routes and A roads as well as tourist information such as National Parks, country parks and world heritage sites.

New for this edition are the details for every new section of the England Coast Path, as well as the latest mapping information for Scotland’s Great Trails. Each map details all major road, rail and ferry links as well as settlements and selected features in 1: 250 000 scale.

The eight OS Road Maps cover Northern Scotland (Orkney and Shetland), Western Scotland and the Western Isles, Southern Scotland and Northumberland, Northern England, East Midlands and East Anglia (including London), Wales and West Midlands, South West England and South Wales, and South East England (including London).

The maps are all available now from the OS shop, bookshops and outdoor retailers.
