  • Promap is fast, the information is always there; it is a cost-effective and easy way to access relevant and reliable mapping data and its functionality saves us time – and time is money.

Looking to the past to help plan for the future OS MasterMap Topography Layer (scale 1:1250). Housing solutions specialist Lovell provides a comprehensive service to its partners, which includes funding the purchase of land, designing and building new homes, refurbishment, regeneration, maintenance and repairs. Its aim is to inspire transformation in communities.

The challenge

Lovell is committed to delivering an excellent service and relies on accurate information to achieve this. It therefore needs cost-effective access to high quality, up-to-date mapping that includes historical information about specific locations and land use, to underpin its extensive portfolio of services.

The solution

Promap®, an online system offering property professionals instant, easy and reliable access to Ordnance Survey mapping, is used daily by Lovell in the Midlands region and has become an integral part of its business.

By allowing users to instantly and flexibly locate, view, measure, customise, print and export all layers of mapping, the service has proved an invaluable tool in the planning application process. The instant access to layers, such as Ordnance Survey’s 1:10 000 Scale Colour Raster and high-resolution aerial imagery, for example, helps with site identification by providing instant access to up-to-date information about the surrounding area.

The detailed drawing and measuring tools within Promap allow Lovell staff to accurately measure and capture distances to existing local amenities to provide detailed transport information to support planning applications. The historic Ordnance Survey mapping function, which uses the County Series maps and historic building plans dating between 1886 and 1970, is essential for presenting an accurate overview of previous occupiers and land-use changes, allowing the identification of features such as engines or asbestos that needs to be considered in plans.

Developed by the Landmark® Information Group, an Ordnance Survey Licensed Partner, Promap provides access to the most up-to-date Ordnance Survey data at a range of scales – from the highly-detailed landscape view of OS MasterMap® Topography Layer and OS MasterMap Integrated Transport Network™ (ITN) Layer (which maps Great Britain’s road network) through to OS VectorMap® Local, which allows users to create detailed backdrop maps that can be tailored to show specific features and information.

The benefits

  • Projects completed within shorter timeframes as a result of instant access to accurate, detailed Ordnance Survey mapping.
  • Improves efficiency and realises cost savings by saving staff time in accessing, analysing and preparing plans.
  • Enables historic information about a site to be taken into account at an early stage in the planning process.

‘The Promap system is extremely easy to use and has a range of tools that allow staff to quickly and painlessly adapt drawings, fit them to a purpose and help in the preparation of electronic site layouts for developments. It is great to have this service at the end of your fingertips and to be able to use it to secure information for different aspects of our work. It is fast, the information is always there, is a cost-effective and easy way to access relevant and reliable mapping data and its functionality saves us time and time is money.’

Related case studies

Establishing accurate, up-to-date ownership information is crucial when negotiating way leaves, leases, acquisitions and access agreements for major pipeline and utility projects, but traditional, historic mapping techniques have proved to be slow and costly. Promap enables the exact position of physical boundaries to be established quickly and easily.

FIND Maps has added value to OS MasterMap by reorganising the feature layers within the map.
