Keeping on top of development with OS data

By using the most up-to-date geographic data from Ordnance Survey, Milton Keynes Council ensures that all new developments are quickly provided with the services they need.

50 years since the town’s creation, Milton Keynes continues to develop at speed. To keep pace with this growth and ensure that no area misses out on vital services, the Council needs a current and accurate view of the city.

What were the challenges?

  • Between 2004 and 2014, Milton Keynes had a growth rate more than twice the national average; the large number of new housing developments and business spaces all require Council services and must be factored into planning for the city.
  • Milton Keynes Council therefore needs current data to ensure that the new homes built every year have access to vital Council services without delay.
  • The future. As the population continues to grow, sustainable growth is paramount.

What was the solution?

OS MasterMap – updated every six weeks – provides a detailed, consistent, and most importantly, up-to-date source of data to Milton Keynes Council so that it can ensure that all new developments are quickly provided with the services they need.

Spatial data continues to support a growing city. As Milton Keynes celebrates 50 years, up-to-date digital mapping is key to serving a rapidly expanding city.

The Council, as part of its continual management of spatial assets, works within the Public Sector Mapping Agreement to share intelligence and enable Smart innovation for a growing city.

Working with MK:Smart, the Council uses the ‘Presumption to Publish’ process to release Ordnance Survey derived data for the MK Data Hub to allow developers to build new smart applications.

What were the outcomes?

  • Planning Applications can be considered in their correct geographical context using the latest data from Topography Layer.
  • New highway infrastructure can be adopted. Routes which are considered eligible for Winter Maintenance can be allocated and street cleansing agreed.
  • Emergency planners are able to update their strategy, ensuring that new residents have suitable evacuation plans and any local welfare provision is catered for.
  • Landscape Maintenance contracts can be adjusted once land is adopted by the Council. Making use of the Topography Layer to capture new assets for maintenance.
  • With the help of the Integrated Transport Network, new safe walking routes to schools are identified which also play an important part in the school admissions process. The home to school transport provision can also be added to, extending cover to new development areas.
  • When enquiries come in from the public using the ‘report it’ facility, the latest mapping available via the Council’s internal web mapping portal ensures the Customer Service team can easily and accurately pinpoint the problem. As OS harvests Intelligence from the Council’s LLPG to inform their survey programme, this ensures new areas that are built are quickly added to OS MasterMap.
  • Individuals and organisations have access to spatial data to allow them to develop services and solutions in areas of transport, energy, water management and key infrastructure networks to support sustainable growth.
