Modelling electric vehicle charging for a more sustainable Slough Borough Council

Slough Borough Council is on a mission to increase coverage of electric vehicle (EV) charging locations.

|2 MIN READ

Challenge

The council aims to make sure every resident without off-street parking – from around 25,000 properties – is within five minutes of a charging point.

Solution

The council has used OS NGD data, along with third party information and GIS modelling, to visualise roads and intersections, applying spatial calculations to predict the most effective locations for new EV charging points.

"The OS data was the most reliable source. The model would have failed without it."

Luis Gomes, Geospatial lead for Slough Borough Council

Result

The model has delivered accurate, data-driven recommendations for EV infrastructure planning, increasing potential coverage (properties within five minutes’ walk of a charging point) from 11% to 90%.

The council now has a more informed approach to supporting sustainable transport, and the increasing demand for EV.

What is the OS NGD?

The OS NGD is a single store of all Ordnance Survey’s authoritative data for Great Britain. The OS NGD delivers the richer data you need for better analysis and our download service, OS Select+Build, makes it easier to find, package and analyse the data you need, such as address and building data for emergency planning.
