The monthly rate limit for the Names API is fairly restrictive, so much so that it makes the product practically unusable for our purposes. We would be willing to pay for unlimited access to the API, but there doesn't seem to be any option to do that.

The nearest paid-for alternative is the Places API, which is the opposite problem - it is massive overkill for what we need, and I would expect the licence costs to be unjustifiable as well.

Is there any way to get unlimited access to the Names API? Or, alternatively, any way to get the full dataset as a download? Again, this is caught between two equally unusable alternatives - the downloadable OpenNames csv is incomplete (it only has populated places, road names and postcodes, not other geographic features such as landforms and forests), but the paid-for downloads contain far more data than we need (and cost more than we could afford).

The loss of the downloadable 50k gazetteer has been a real problem here. This used to be the ideal dataset for our purposes, but now that it has been withdrawn there is no open data alternative that provides anywhere near its functionality.

Is there any prospect of this gap being filled, either by offering the full OpenNames dataset for download or by providing a means of unrestricted access to the Names API?
