Three weeks to sign up for our technical workshop

Do you want to know more about OS data, how to make then most of it and partnering with OS? Why not come along to our technical showcase to find out more and meet our Inside Sales team.

Inside Sales work closely with the majority of OS’s SME Partner Community.  We assist the start-ups and new business ventures.  Working closely with the Geovation Hub based in London, we guide Geovation members and entrepreneurs that come to us direct, through the process of becoming an OS Partner.

The team has a range of experience from within OS and from working in the public sector, in sales, customer service and GIS expertise. We offer support from the very beginning of your journey to becoming a Partner, explaining what being an OS Partner entails, how our pricing and licensing works, advice on contracts  how to calculate any royalties that may be due, and of course, we can help you with product enquiries.

If you have trialled our data (under the Data Exploration Licence) or you are simply ready to go to market using our data or our APIs with a commercial product, our team will take the time to really understand what it is that you are looking to achieve and walk you through the contracts and licensing journey.

Please come along to the technical showcase to have a chance of meeting the team and letting them help you to explore how to use GIS data to meet your business need.  If you are unable to attend please speak to our team, you can call us on 023 80 055991 or email: partnerenquiries@os.uk.

OS GitHub page has an overhaul

If you’re a user of OS data, you may well have explored our GitHub page. For those unfamiliar with GitHub, it is a web portal where the 28 million users primarily share code and engage at a technical level. GitHub has been adopted by a large number or commercial and public sector organisations, so we jumped at the chance to create a page and work closer with users of our products.

Having been active on GitHub for a while now, we’ve been able to receive feedback from OS partners and other users (including those who were at our technical showcase event). From this, we’ve recognised there was a lack of navigation on the page that made it tricky to locate content. Read More

‘Make Your Mark’ interactive painted map

Working with Solent Showcase Gallery, we’ve supported Southampton-based illustrator and mural artist Nathan Evans in illustrating a map of Southampton on the floor. We caught up with Nathan to hear a bit more about his process and how he found painting a map…

As an artist specialising in typography, my work usually focuses on lettering. The opportunity to explore something new is what originally sparked my interest about the ‘Make Your Mark’ project. I work in lettering because you can create an immediate and clear connection with the viewer, and I feel this way about maps too. They seem to be able to seamlessly connect to an audience and evoke a pure emotional response to the sense of place that we all feel.

It was really exciting for me to have OS on board as a partner and, as Southampton is the home of their HQ, it worked perfectly to have their support on mapping the city. Read More

CityVerve virtual museum

Here at OS Labs, we’re presenting project work most days – by slide deck, report or a quick chat. But sometimes it needs to attract attention and create a buzz… like our virtual museum for CityVerve. We created a 3D interactive exhibition to mark the conclusion of CityVerve, the Manchester-based UK Internet of Things demonstrator project. Find out more…

What is your role?

I am the Head of Data Management and Requirements. Being part of the new data office and working for OS’s first Chief Data Officer Caroline Bellamy was an exciting prospect I could not turn down!

Meet the team: Dave Tucker

Continuing our series to introduce you to the hard-working individuals within OS and showcase the wide variety of work we do, meet Dave Tucker. Dave has been with us for a long time but has always worked out in the field. Here, he gives us an insight on his role in mapping Great Britain…

How long have you worked for OS?

43 years – I started at OS in April 1975 at 19 years old! I started as a basic grade 4 surveyor after a gruelling survey course lasting 9 months. I’ve since been sponsored for qualifications including an MSc in Surveying. Currently, I am the South Region Manager in Field Operations and have been in this role for 15 years. I have also been an RICS Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) since 2006.

Can you describe your working day?

In three words, each day for me is busy, varied and rewarding. I have daily responsibilities such as liaising with my fellow field managers, regional management team and the team of 40 surveyors working remotely across London and the South East (using Skype as appropriate). Read More

Meet the team: Joe Harrison

Continuing our series to introduce some friendly faces from the people working at OS and showcase the wide variety of work we do, meet Joe Harrison. Joe joined OS on our graduate scheme in 2017 as a data scientist and has worked in a few areas of the business so far. If you’re a follower of the blog, you may recognise some of the project Joe’s worked on…

Hi, I’m Joe, one of the data science grads from the most recent graduate scheme. My first placement was an eight-month stay in the Consultancy & Technical Services team from September until the end of March. I then moved to the GeoDataViz team with Charley and Paul for a two-month placement.

Scottish Boundary Commission

During my first week in the team, Charley was contacted by the Scottish Boundary Commission who wanted advice on how to visualise the new Scottish constituency boundaries and the changes. I created a couple of examples using QGIS. I improved the clarity of the maps by reducing the number of colours, and by adding shadows to emphasise areas of interest. Read More

Making the most of OS OpenData

Last month marked the seven year anniversary of OS OpenData. We have recently shared insights into how our open products are made and how they are being used. In this post we would like to share some of the other activities we undertake to support our open data and support the community of users, including those involved with free and open source software.

The take-up and effective use of our datasets are fundamental to their success. With this in mind we have produced various resources that lower the barrier to entry and make use easier. We also support the community of users in various ways, from sponsorship of events and awards to the release of assets and resources to lower the barriers of entry.

If you are using, or planning to use OS OpenData then you can find help and support here. There are frequently asked questions and a forum for posting questions and keeping up to date with the latest announcements. Read More
