How geospatial data and expertise is driving UK towards zero emissions
Adoption of EVs, and therefore reduced dependency of petrol- and diesel-fuelled cars, needs to be supported with the right infrastructure in place, and through that, a positive customer experience. OZEV have been working to improve that experience at EV charge points. It recently published a government response on how it will make it easier to pay, open up charge point data, use a single payment metric, and ensure a reliable network.
However, while OZEV understood how critical it is to use geospatial data in its objectives, it wanted to utilise OS’ experience in this field alongside the development of the open data workstream. It wants to ensure that open public EV chargepoint data can be used in an interoperable way across sectors and to support local authorities to make policy decisions.
A consultant, using OS’s technical skills and capabilities, supported OZEV in the delivery of its objectives. Robert Wingfield, an OS technical expert with data science experience, was deployed to OZEV for three months – extended to a further six months, due to the significance of the projects.
Following extensive consultation with industry stakeholders, recommendations were presented to OZEV on how to underpin an EV charging data model with authoritative geospatial data. Having taken the time to understand its requirements, Robert was able to upskill the OZEV team, helping it to fully maximise the use of geospatial data. Robert also provided insight into how geospatial data can support policy development and decision-making.
Recommendations for an EV charging data model have been presented and recommended to be taken forward, which will likely involve implementation within prototypes. This could then become a vital part of the national EV charge point data ecosystem.
Within those six months, OZEV developed its geospatial maturity. They recognise geospatial data as an essential asset, and OS’ legacy carries the likely intention of OZEV making policy decisions. Because OZEV recognises how geospatial awareness can benefit public and private sectors, it can provide strong technical solutions to consumers to improve experiences at EV charge points.
After six months of consultancy, OZEV is better equipped and knowledgeable to develop infrastructure that will become a prevalent feature of our day-to-day lives.
